Find the following fractions of each set based on the hot-air balloons in the picture. 

Fractions of a Set

  1. What fraction of the total number of balloons on the ground have polka dots? 
  2. What fraction of the total number of balloons in the air have stars? 
  3. What fraction of the heart-shaped balloons have stripes? 
  4. What fraction of the total number of balloons are a solid color?

  • When finding a fraction of a set, first count the total number of objects in the set. Write this number as your denominator.
  • Next, count the number of objects within the set that fit the criteria you’re looking for. Write this number as your numerator.

In this set of circles, 2/3 of them are white.

Fractions
Fraction of a Set or Whole
numerator

The top part of a fraction. It tells us how many equal parts of the whole you have.

Example: If an apple is cut into four equal slices, and you eat one, the numerator for how many slices are eaten is 1, because it is one out of the four pieces that make up the whole apple.
denominator

The bottom part of a fraction. It tells us the total number of equal pieces or things.

Example: If an apple is cut into four equal slices, the denominator is 4, because four pieces make up the whole apple.
