Dusk starts at 11 in the morning at the new nocturnal house at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Louisiana. As the exhibit darkens to night, the building fills with the sound of waking animals and excited visitors.

Screaming hairy armadillos, giant cave roaches, and poison arrow frogs are just some of the animals living here. People especially love the zoo’s eight vampire bats.

The zoo wants to help protect the animals’ wild relatives. To do that, “we’re hoping to highlight animals that you wouldn’t have the opportunity to see unless you’re going into the deep jungle at night,” says zookeeper Liz Wilson.
