Train Trekker
Nearly 1.8 billion people rode the NYC subway in 2015.
In 2016, Matthew Ahn visited all 469 New York City subway stations in less than 24 hours.* The 25-year-old set a Guinness World Record in the process.
Ahn rode trains during rush hour, when many people hurry to and from work. That’s when trains are the most frequent.
Let’s say the morning rush is from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and the evening rush is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. What is the elapsed time between the beginning of the morning rush to the end of the evening rush? Draw and fill in a number line on a separate sheet of paper.
Sometimes it was faster for Ahn to run on the street between stations than it was to ride the train.
This happened in the Bronx. Ahn exited the 241st Street stop at 12:34 p.m. He ran 1.9 miles and arrived at Dyre Avenue 18 minutes later. Draw his arrival time at Dyre Avenue on an analog clock face.
The A is the longest train line—more than 31 miles!
Let’s say the train’s average speed is 25 miles per hour. Could you visit all the stops on the A train in 1 hour? Explain why or why not.
Ahn’s 2016 record was 21 hours, 28 minutes, and 14 seconds.
About how many minutes is this? Round your answer to the nearest minute.
TIME: A type of measurement recorded in units such as hours, minutes, days, or years
ELAPSED TIME: The length of time that passes between the strat and end of an event
ANALOG CLOCK: A clock with moving hands that point from 1 to 12 to show the time
* On January 1, 2017, a new subway line opened, bringing the total number of stations to 472. Ahn might have to try for a new record again!
